Wildlife Sightings
Every week we log sightings which are of interest or which have caused excitment. To avoid disturbance, locations are generally not disclosed. If you spot something of interest on the estate, please let us know and we'll post your observations here.
We have marked those sightings which we are particularly excited about
with this symbol.
October 2007 - November 2007
13th November Golden eagle viewed from above by walkers on Ben Hiant
4th November Two hooded crows spent the morning dropping whelks onto rocks on the shore to break the shells. This behaviour was featured on a recent episode of Wild Scotland on BBC 2, where it was reported as being exclusive to birds on the Island of Rum. Guests also report spending 40 minutes watching an otter catching and eating fish.
21st October Great Northern Diver, Otters, Hen Harrier, Snipe, Owl and a "plague" of Buzzards at Swordle.
19th October Fox, badger and pine marten plus many deer seen in the headlights during an evening outing.
15th October Sea eagle hunting over a hill loch, viewed from about 200 feet away, also seen close to the road at Camus na Gael.
12th October Three otters crossing the road together!
8th October Stags are rutting - the recent full moon provided great opportunities to hear and see them. Sightings throughout September included a family of otters, a golden eagle flying at 80 feet beside the road by Camus na Gael, peregrine, black throated divers, many buzzards, sparrowhawk, barn owls, tawny owls, male and female hen harrier regularly between the junction and the village, and separate houses reporting a badger in the back garden and a pine marten outside the window. Colours are changing every day, some bright hot days and crisp nights and some warm damp autumnal days. Delicious ripe brambles being enjoyed by everyone, man and beast.
